Picking the wrong OEM in your first year can set your brand back 18 months. Picking the right one becomes an unfair advantage for the next decade. The difference is usually a checklist you didn't run.

Signal 1 — are they a factory or a trader?

Ask for their business license and check the scope of operations. Traders will pivot the conversation to "we work with 50 factories." Real manufacturers will invite you to walk the floor. If the video call always happens in a conference room, that's a signal.

Signal 2 — can they show you a similar product they've shipped?

Reference orders in your category matter more than certificates. A factory that's shipped 50,000 units of a comparable product will have baked in the failure modes. A factory that hasn't is learning on your dime.

  • Business license + factory audit report
  • Reference orders in your product category
  • Sample production run before bulk PO
  • Third-party pre-shipment inspection built into the contract
In OEM, the factory you don't pick matters more than the one you do.

Your first OEM decision is a bet on relationships that will last years. Spend the time. Take the trip. Read the contract three times.
