OEM. Private label. White label. Contract manufacturing. These four terms describe a spectrum, and treating them as synonyms leads to expensive misunderstandings in your first factory conversation.

Private label — the fastest path

You pick a product the factory already makes and add your logo, box, and colorway. Time to market: 6–10 weeks. Investment: low. Trade-off: your competitor can source the exact same product from the same factory.

OEM — the differentiated path

You bring specs (materials, dimensions, features), the factory manufactures to those specs, and the tooling is often shared. Time to market: 12–20 weeks. Investment: medium. Trade-off: you own the design intent, not always the tooling.

Private label sells fast. OEM builds a moat.

How to choose

If you're launching in the next 90 days and testing category demand, start with private label. If you're building a brand you plan to defend, invest in OEM — even if the first shipment is smaller.
