Which products need BIS
As of 2025, sixty-plus categories are notified under CRS — from mobile phones and laptops to LED luminaires, power banks, cash registers, and set-top boxes. The list expands roughly quarterly. Always check the current notification before you order.
The registration process
Registration is manufacturer-specific and model-specific. You need lab testing at a BIS-recognized laboratory, factory audit documentation, and application via the BIS Manak online portal. Realistic timeline: 45–70 days per model.
- Sample testing at BIS-recognized lab: 15–25 days
- Application review: 20–35 days
- R-number issuance and label printing: 5–10 days
The trap most buyers fall into
Trusting a factory's claim that their model 'already has BIS.' BIS is granted to the factory-model combination — if you're the importer, the registration must be linked to your import. Verify the R-number on the BIS portal before you ship.
